As a Chief Technology Officer (CTO), your days are spent leading your organisation’s technology strategy and ensuring that technology is aligned with business goals. Your responsibilities include identifying and implementing new technologies that can improve the organisation’s efficiency and competitiveness, while also managing risks and ensuring security.

You start your day by reviewing any technical issues that have arisen overnight and developing plans to address them.

Throughout the day, you work with your IT teams to ensure that technology solutions are being implemented correctly and that they align with the operational goals of the company. With the added pressure of the rapidly evolving threat landscape, you also spend time researching emerging technologies and identifying opportunities to incorporate them into the company’s technology strategy.

You attend several meetings with other Executives and Department Heads to discuss technology initiatives and strategies for innovation. You also must find the time to review the company’s technology infrastructure and identify areas for improvement.

You attend meetings with vendors and evaluate new technology solutions, negotiating contracts and making recommendations for purchase. You also spend time communicating with employees to ensure that they understand how to use new technology solutions and that they are being utilised effectively.

On any given day, whilst managing a large and complex technology infrastructure. you will be balancing the need for technology innovation with the need for security and compliance.  Your daily responsibilities include but are not exhaustive to:

  • Overseeing disparate vendor technologies and ecosystems ensuring operational effectiveness and they are up to date.
  • Managing technology vendors and service providers – negotiating contracts and service-level agreements against budgets and KPIs respectively.
  • Ensuring that your organisation’s technology infrastructure is secure and compliant with relevant regulations and industry standards.
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of technology projects, such as new software applications, migration or infrastructure upgrades, and ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and to optimum quality.
  • Meeting with other executives and business leaders to discuss technology needs and strategies, and to ensure that technology investments align with business goals.
  • Ensuring technology scalability so the organisation can expand operations as needed while minimising Total Cost of Ownership.
  • Stay up to date with the latest technology trends and innovations, identifying opportunities to leverage emerging technologies to improve your organisation’s operations and competitive position.

At the end of the day, you review progress on ongoing technology projects, document any incidents and get ready to do it all again tomorrow.
